HEALTHCARE UPDATE
FDA Approves Pritelivir for Hard-to-Treat Herpes Infections
The FDA approved Hovilpri (pritelivir) on October 9 for certain adults with weakened immune systems and herpes simplex infections that have not responded to other treatments.
A Defined Group of Adult Patients
The approval concerns lesions on the skin or mucosal surfaces in immunocompromised adults after unsuccessful treatment with acyclovir, valacyclovir or famciclovir. The FDA’s trial description includes people with cancer, stem-cell or organ transplants and other immune-related conditions. It is not an approval for every herpes infection.
Questions for Your Treating Team
For people reviewing complex care, our practical takeaway is to ask their treating team how the authorization relates to their existing plan, including prior antiviral therapy, drug interactions and local access. US approval alone does not establish availability or insurance coverage in China or elsewhere.
