A Cancer Hospital Founded in Shanghai in 1931

The institution is also known in Chinese as Fudan University Affiliated Cancer Hospital. It is a tertiary Grade A specialist hospital: cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment form its central purpose. Fudan University provides its academic setting for teaching and research.

The hospital’s current overview describes campuses in Xuhui and Pudong. Its figures for the end of 2025 list 2,177 available beds and 50 clinical and technical departments across those two campuses. These details give a picture of the institution and its work.

Teams Organized Around Different Cancer Types

The hospital directory includes breast, pancreatic, head and neck, colorectal, lung, liver, stomach, gynecological and urological cancer services. Several areas have both surgical and comprehensive-treatment teams, alongside a radiation treatment center.

For a patient, this means that cancer care involves different kinds of specialists. A breast surgeon works on surgical questions, while a medical oncology team considers drug treatment and a radiation oncology team works on radiotherapy. The relevant review depends on the question about an existing diagnosis or treatment plan.

Breast Cancer Care Across Several Specialties

The Shanghai Clinical Medical Center for Breast Diseases was established at the hospital in 2002. Fudan’s account of its development describes a team bringing together surgery, radiotherapy, drug treatment, pathology and imaging.

The university’s 2022 report describes breast-conserving and reconstructive surgery, alongside joint clinics for complex cases. Diagnosis, treatment planning and recovery after surgery are parts of the same breast cancer program.

Pathology: The Tissue Diagnosis Behind Cancer Care

Pathology is the examination of tissue or cells to help identify a disease. Within the breast cancer program, the pathology team works alongside surgeons, imaging specialists and other clinicians. Fudan’s 2022 account describes both in-house breast pathology reports and consultations on cases referred from elsewhere.

Reviewing a pathology report differs from examining slides. For a second opinion involving tissue review, the receiving team confirms the materials needed; an uploaded report alone may not be sufficient.

Shao Zhimin, also published as Zhi-Ming Shao, is a breast cancer clinician and researcher at the center. The hospital’s current expert directory identifies him as chief of its breast tumor center and the lead expert of its breast multidisciplinary team.

His research includes the Fudan classification of triple-negative breast cancer, a way of studying differences within a cancer subtype. Fudan also describes his participation in the St. Gallen expert panel and the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.
