HEALTHCARE UPDATE
FDA Approves a New Maintenance Regimen for HER2-Positive Breast Cancer
The FDA approved a tucatinib combination on October 7 for maintenance treatment of certain adults with advanced HER2-positive breast cancer, following initial treatment.
A New US Approval After Initial Treatment
The approval covers tucatinib (Tukysa) with trastuzumab and pertuzumab for adults with unresectable locally advanced or metastatic HER2-positive breast cancer following induction treatment.
The FDA describes a randomized trial involving 654 adults. The main outcome was progression-free survival, the time before cancer progressed; overall-survival data were not mature. The regulator also lists important safety warnings, including liver toxicity and diarrhea.

Discussing a Treatment Change With a Specialist
A useful question for your treating oncologist or a second-opinion reviewer is whether the announcement relates to your diagnosis and treatment stage. Prepare the existing HER2 pathology result and treatment timeline for that discussion. A US approval does not establish availability or insurance coverage in another country.
