A Career Focused on Nasopharyngeal Cancer

Ma’s principal research interests include prognosis and comprehensive treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. His work examines how disease is classified and how different treatments can be combined or sequenced. SYSUCC’s biography identifies him as a professor of Radiation Oncology and a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

This is a disease-specific area of expertise: his professional focus is nasopharyngeal cancer, rather than every cancer or every head-and-neck condition.

Training in China and at MD Anderson

After graduating from Hunan Medical University in 1985, Ma earned a master’s degree in Oncology in Guangzhou in 1990. He later completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in Radiation Oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

That international research training forms part of a career centered on SYSUCC. It does not imply that he currently practices medicine in the United States.

A Phase 3 Trial Published in the New England Journal of Medicine

A 2019 New England Journal of Medicine paper lists Jun Ma with the SYSUCC Radiation Oncology team. The multicenter randomized phase 3 trial studied induction chemotherapy—chemotherapy before the main combined treatment—in patients with locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal cancer.

The comparison concerned adding an initial chemotherapy phase before chemoradiotherapy, versus chemoradiotherapy alone. Its contribution was to a defined treatment-sequencing question, rather than a claim that one approach suits every patient.

Contributing to Joint CSCO–ASCO Guidance

Ma is an author of the joint Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology and American Society of Clinical Oncology guideline published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology in 2021. The guideline addresses chemotherapy combined with radiotherapy for stage II–IVA nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

The expert panel brought together radiation oncology, medical oncology, surgery and patient advocacy. The publication describes a literature review of 108 relevant studies. This connects the center’s work with an international professional effort to address treatment timing and combinations.

A Focused Question for a Specialist Review

For a patient with an existing nasopharyngeal cancer diagnosis, a second opinion may concern the staging assessment or a proposed sequence of treatments. The reviewing specialist needs the original clinical records and the precise question to assess whether a written review is suitable.

China Heal Plus checks case acceptance, the proposed reviewer and the written scope before arranging a service. This article describes Ma’s professional background; it does not establish that he is an available reviewer or a partner of China Heal Plus.
